Back to the Classroom: bringing lessons learned from distance learning back into the blended-learning classroom

The COVID-19 Pandemic required many courses to migrate from face-to-face learning to a remote learning model. This study follows a general English curriculum for robotic majors at Chubu University and details the way it changed from face-to-face classrooms to distance learning and back again. The focus of the study is not only on how the curriculum changed and adapted to face new challenges, but what lessons were learned during the changes. It explores the effects changes in curriculum have had on the students in the second year program in 2022, who just took the course remotely in their freshman year and just finished their first semester of face-to-face instruction. The study addresses both their perception of the course as a whole and their motivation in English learning. The study aims to serve as a small case study in how teachers and students can adapt to unexpected changes in methods of study and highlight both the gradual and non-linear nature of the language learning process. Finally, the experiences emphasize the importance of flexibility and patience when it comes to English language pedagogy.

新型コロナ禍の到来により、多くの授業は対面から遠隔授業への変更を求められた。本稿は、中部大学ロボット理工学科における英語プログラムが、対面授業から遠隔へ、そしてまた対面授業へどのように授業工夫を試みて最善を尽くしたかを報告するものである。また、本稿では新たな境遇にどのように挑んだかという方法論ばかりでなく、遠隔授業期間に我々が得られた教訓についても着目し、またその一方で、学生は遠隔授業の間に授業をどうとらえていたか、英語学習に対する動機づけはどうであったかについても、特に本年度2年生授業を受講している学生について述べていく。この研究は思いがけず変化を強いられた折に、教員や学生がどのように学習方法を変化・適応し得るのかを紹介するものであり、また、語学習得の道のりがいかにゆっくりで、非直線的なものかを示すケーススタディだとも言える。さらに、一連の変化の経験からは、英語教授法においていかに柔軟性と忍耐が重要であるかも明らかになっている。
