Abstract

The paper investigates the history and present state of Ukrainian migration to Japan since Ukraine’s independence in 1991. Using the statistical data of the Ministry of Justice of Japan during 1993–2021 and the results of semi-structured individual interviews with 47 Ukrainians living in Japan, the study explores the dynamics and the main motives for Ukrainian migration to Japan. It also highlights the main changes in the Ukrainian community since Russian invasion of Ukraine launched on February 24, 2022.
