Description

With the spread of the Internet and smartphones, the ways of using the Internet are increasingly diverse and the media environment is changing rapidly. It is particularly social media that has affected communication between individuals. The purpose of this research is to discuss the possibility of using social media during emergencies in rural areas in China. In this research, the author introduces the experience of the use of social media during emergencies in Japan since the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake. Moreover, the author conducted an interview survey of residents in one rural area in China regarding their social media use behavior during normal times. As a result, it was found that residents used social media in three roles: as a communication tool, as a "bulletin board" for local information, and as a tool for receiving information from outside the community. Based on the above, this paper has examined the function of social media as a means of communicating information to rural communities during emergencies in rural areas in China.
