This paper investigates how positive attitudes toward English language learning were constructed among students in the Department of English, who are assumed to have entered the university with positive attitudes toward learning English. In the context of engagement, a new concept of motivation, is used. This is an experimental study to explore the students’ path to engagement by listening to the learners’ voices through their stories.Elements considered to increase engagement were taken from Engaging Language Learners in Contemporary Classrooms (Mercer & Dörnyei, 2020)．Those elements include “surroundings of learners,” “support for learners’ mindset,” “teacher-learner rapport,” “positive classroom dynamics” and “classroom culture,” “task engagement,” “maintaining task engagement,” and “interest toward the language.” Positive learner engagement is caused by “school environment,” “language learning,” “syllabus design and materials,” “learning tasks and their design,” “relationships with fellow learners,” and “relationships with the teacher,” as well as “home environment,” “out-of-class activities,” and “interest in the learning object （language and culture）.” Future research that actually conducts educational interventions, such as action research on specific examples of engagement, will help to further clarify the concept of engagement.本稿では、英語学習に対して前向きな気持ちを持ち大学に入学してきたと想定される国際英語学科の学生を対象に、英語に対する前向きな姿勢がどのように構築されてきたのか、動機づけの新しい概念であるエンゲージメントという括りで調査をした。学習者の声を聴くことで、学生たちのエンゲージメントへの道のりを探る試行的な調査である。エンゲージメントを高めると考えられる要素は、Engaging Language Learners in Contemporary Classrooms （Mercer & Dörnyei, 2020）から引用した。これらの要素には、学習者エンゲージメントを取り巻くもの、学習者のマインドセットへの支援、教師と学習者の信頼関係、ポジティブな教室力学と教室文化、タスク・エンゲージメントの喚起、タスク・エンゲージメントの維持、言語そのものへの興味がある。積極的な学習者のエンゲージメントは、「学校環境」「言語学習」「シラバスデザインおよび教材」「学習タスクとそのデザイン」「学習者仲間の関係」「教師との関係」に加えて、「家庭環境」「授業外活動」「学習対象（言語・異文化）への関心」から引き起こされることがわかった。今後は、エンゲージメントの具体的な例をアクション・リサーチなどで実際に教育的介入をおこなう研究により、エンゲージメントの概念をより明確に示すことができるであろう。
