In recent years, movements such as “Black Lives Matter” (BLM) have been active, with people around the world gathering in cities to claim equal rights and an end to racism. Nobel-Prize winning author, Doris Lessing has long given voice to her black characters in her writing career. In comparison with her earlier novels and short stories set in Africa, people's attitudes seem to have improved, leading towards a more harmonized society in her 2003 short story, “Victoria and the Staveneys.” However, Lessing reveals in her works that superficially liberal characters and readers lack both genuine sympathy and an understanding of the underprivileged. She stresses the importance of compassionate and sustained attention towards minorities and the underprivileged. Social inequalities caused by the colour of one's skin will not be alleviated without solving other aspects of inequality based on perceived differences of social class.
