説明

The purpose of this paper is to observe how D. H. Lawrence evaluated Emily Brontë's “life” when he wrote ‘Emily Brontë had life,’ in his essay “Blessed Are the Powerful.” By analyzing the essay, this paper tries to clarify his complicated idea of “real life” and examine what he meant when he called her life “real.” Then the paper suggests the possibility of the two writers sharing very similar philosophies of “life,” by analyzing Brontë’s poem “No Coward Soul Is Mine.” The poem shows her worshipping the power of creativity and her devotion to creative activities in life. Her ideas of and attitudes towards leading a creative life seem to have many elements in common with what Lawrence defined as “having the power of life”;with which support, according to his theory, we can have “real life.”At the same time, however, the ways he characterizes “the power of life” are different. Lawrence describes it as something changeable and transient, while Brontë presents it as stable and permanent.
