Assessing economy-wide eco-efficiency of materials produced in Japan
Abstract
Highlights Japan's economy-wide eco-efficiency of materials and itsdecomposition analysisare conducted for the first time. More than 400 materials, 13 impact categories, and 4 life cycle stages were analyzed. Material groups with a larger share of value added andenvironmental impactto national total, except for pig iron andcrude steel, show lower eco-efficiency. Resource consumption, land use, and global warming are the main impact categories and foreign supply chains is the major impact stage. Circular economyand shift to renewable energy to raise eco-efficiency are proposed by material group, focusing on the trade perspective, economic and environmental contribution.
