Abstract

This article will attempt to reconstruct the buildings, the exhibition places and part of the exhibits of a museum that existed about a hundred years ago in Lucerne, Switzerland, the International Museum of War and Peace. In retelling its history the “first” museum, built in 1910 and existing till 1909 but now buried in history, will be focused on. Also to be touched upon is the “second” museum that moved from the “first” in 1910. Although it disappeared in 1919 the building still stands today. With the aim of verifying its historical existence this article will make use of a number of photographs and charts made from that era, with the permission of the Stadarchiv Luzern and other related institutions. This in fact differentiates this article from ‘The International Museum of War and Peace (Schweizerishe Zeitschnft fur Geschichte, Vol. 31, pp. 185-202)’ of 1981, an article by Dr Peter van den Dungen, peace historian in the U. K., which documents in detail the history of the Museum from its beginning to its end. The present writer hopes that this article can complement the precursory work.
