Abstract

This paper takes Noh performers and gei-maiko as examples of traditional Japanese cultural professionals and examines the career development process of traditional cultural professionals from professionals to experts and the characteristics of this process. The career development of Noh performers and gei-maiko from professionals to experts can be divided into five stages: (1) the starting period when they join the apprentice system, (2) the early stages of their careers when they make use of the apprentice system and its complementary school system, (3) the first half of their mid-career when they become independent as professionals and hone their specialized skills, (4) the second half of the mid-career when they aim for a higher level by utilizing developmental networks among professionals; and (5) the late stage of the career when they are both in charge of fostering future generations and pursuing their artistry.
