- “Battle Graves” as Media: the Life of a Sino-Japanese War Victim through Tombstone Inscriptions

This study aimed to reveal the memory of a soldier, who expired at the age of 25 during the Sino–Japanese War, by analyzing his tombstone inscriptions and belongings. Specifically, the life of a young man from a rural area who joined the military was analyzed, that is, how he fought in combat, passed away, and was memorialized. Through this, the intention of the study was to consider military service and war that young people could not avoid until the end of World War II. The main items investigated were (1) tombstone inscriptions related to the soldier, (2) records of military exploits and details of battles during the period from the soldier’s dispatch to death, (3) army notebooks, (4) Miyakonojo Infantry 23rd Regiment Battle Records, (5) paintings published by the military relief department, (6) preserved photographs, and (7) mementos (belt bag, etc.). Additionally, the author visited the battlefields where the soldier fought. By doing so, the author tried to experience the ethos of the place. The field r search in China was conducted in August 2019, before the outbreak of the coronavirus disease.
