- Familiarization of Pet in Japan: From an Internet Research

Nowadays, more and more people consider pet as family in Japan. I name this trend as ‘familiarization of pet. Behind the issue, there are two trends. First the number of single people (who have no spouses) has been increasing in Japan thanks to the increase of unmarried rate and divorce rate. Second trend is about intimacy, people who want to feel ‘pure’ intimacy but don’t feel with human family member. So I think people who want to feel intimacy but don’t feel with other people select pets as objects of intimacy. I conducted an internet survey about pet owner’s intimate life. According to the survey, many pet owners (esp. dog and cat owners) feel intimacy with heir pet. Especially singles and married people who don’t get along with their spouses tend to make intimate relationship. So, familiarization of pet can prevent increasing single people from feeling isolation.
