Description

The objective of this study is to define methodologies for constructing academic frameworks that lead to deeper, substantive discussions, with an emphasis on updating the self-model. This research leverages principles from the case method discussion model. Initially, this paper delineates the curricular architecture and intentions of the lesson plans for three discussion classes, conducted by the author with undergraduate students, without the use of case materials. Subsequently, the author analyzed how these lesson designs led to more in-depth discussions, drawing on both board notes and discussion transcripts from those sessions. The results make it clear that it is important to establish a comprehensive theme aligned with educational objectives as the end point for discussion. This serves as a guide for structuring consecutive discussions around narrower subthemes, facilitated by the use of effective questions and prompts. Such an approach enables students to tackle the overarching theme from multiple perspectives, thereby challenging their existing viewpoints. For this reason, careful planning in terms of "educational objectives," "questions," and "discussion management plan” is imperative for achieving classroom discussions.
