This paper describes the background to Toyota's decision to start producing automobiles in the U.S.in the 1980s, and the process by which it began local production of automobiles in the U.S. while overcoming various difficulties in entering the U.S. automobile market. It also describes how Toyota achieved local production of automobiles in the U.S., far away from its home country by using its advantage of Toyota Production System. And also the purpose of this paper is to give an overview of how Toyota was able to demonstrate its advantage, how it covered the risk of operating local production, how joint production with GM was realized, and what the results or fruits were for Toyota and GM.
