Abstract

Very early rye and unearned sorghum were introduced into the crop rotation system in 2022 and 2023 to improve fodder crop yields and reduce farm labor in the spring. This trial has been running since 2018, and this paper reports results for 2020 and 2023. Annual yields exceeded 250 kg/a in 2022 and 200 kg/a in 2023. In 2023, sorghum yields were reduced due to sugarcane aphid insect infestation. Yields decreased especially on the northwest side of the field. The introduction of very early rye allowed more than three weeks between rye harvest and sorghum seeding. In 2023, sorghum yields were lower on the northwest side of the test plot. Nitrate nitrogen was reduced in the soil on the northwest side of the test plot. However, the association between reduced sorghum yield and reduced nitrate nitrogen could not be determined. Therefore, further investigation is needed to determine these causal relationships.
