Abstract

An NGO in Minamata city, ‘Soshisha, Minamata Disease Support Center (Soshisha)’, shifted their main emphasis of activity from demanding apologies and relief measures for victims to transmitting the truth and signifcance of the Minamata disease incident to society. After being stagnant for some years, their museum activities developed considerably in the mid1990s. The article is intended to explain the social conditions underpinning their success. By referring to the concept of field, as defined by French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, this article presents an exploration of the development of the museum activities as a process by which Soshisha continued to reorganize practices with the possibilities and constraints brought by the transformation in the Minamata disease field in the 1990s. In doing so, this article presents examination not only of how the opportunities and constraints brought by the transformation in the Minamata disease movement field transformed Soshisha’s practices in museum activities, but also of how their practices in museum activities transformed the Minamata disease movement field.
