Abstract

Since the publication of recent temporary custody guidelines, caring for children using an approach of accepting interactions by staff has become a basic principle of support in temporary custody facilities. However, a unified, practical support model has yet to be presented due to the special circumstances surrounding temporary custody facilities. Accordingly, we conducted an interview survey of temporary care facility staff and explored the process of encouraging accepting interactions using M-GTA. Analysis of interview data resulted in the generation of 34 concepts, 12 categories, and 4 category groups. An investigation of the relationships between each category and category group revealed that “accepting interactions by staff” is one concept included in the category group child-centered interactions. This investigation also demonstrated a process by which child-centered interactions, understanding problems and exploring solutions, use of resources and psychological support, and organizational management that boosts the effects of support encourage accepting interactions, and promote positive change in children. These results demonstrate a child-centered support model in which staff promote positive change in children while focusing on the child.
