Abstract

This study aimed to clarify the effectiveness of practical training through the analysis of assessment sheets completed by first-year students aspiring to be school nurses before and after their participation in practical training involving a visit to a nurse’s office. Testing of the average scores for self-assessments completed before and after training revealed significantly higher scores for items “basic treatment for children” after training. Furthermore, analysis of “reflection and impressions” after practical training revealed grouping into five core categories: “understanding children,” “understanding the job of school nurses and the functions of the nurse’s office,” “deepening one’s learning at university,” “improving the intentions and willingness to be school nurse,” and “the challenges and limitations of practical training involving a visit to a nurse’s office.” This showed that students’ learning and realizations were diverse. These findings suggest that observing the management of school infirmaries and the activities of school nurses at an early stage of their studies motivated students, who were beginning to experience fluctuations in their aptitude and intentions, to learn and to become school nurses. This study also revealed limitations in the activities and content that students could observe during their one-day visit to a nurse’s office.
