抄録

This study considers The Pilgrim's Progress as a record of John Bunyan's spiritual struggle during his imprisonment, and positions it as representative of seventeenth-century English prison literature. Bunyan was influenced by John Fox's martyrology, but he used his own unique method to portray those who were imprisoned. For example, rather than writing about imprisoned characters who suffer and lose their lives to religious persecution and portraying them as heroes, in the City of Vanity, he raises his voice against the persecutors and declares his opposition to them. Thus, Bunyan's prison literature is not only a lesson or warning to the reader, but it can also be read as a protest against the religious persecution of his time. It conveys to the present day a picture of the faithful in seventeenthcentury England who did not succumb to spiritual oppression or physical bondage.
