In the context of English as a Lingua Franca (ELF) interactions, it is often observed that Japanese participants may feel hesitant about taking their turns to speak. This hesitation can lead to other participants quickly taking turns, making it challenging for the Japanese participants to find opportunities to express themselves. This dynamic can sometimes result in misunderstandings, where other participants may wrongly perceive the Japanese individuals as disinterested or bored due to their predominantly listening behavior. This discourse analysis study examines interactions among groups of three to four participants from various countries, including Japan, Korea, India, and China. focusing on the answer part of question-answer sequences where Japanese participants are given opportunities to talk. Approximately five hours of video-recorded conversations were collected. Although the responses by Japanese participants had no significant delays and their answers maintained grammatical accuracy, they had no chance to develop their talk or give away their turn to the other participants soon. The discourse analysis revealed that Japanese participants frequently provided shorter answers than their counterparts from different countries, contrary to expectations. They usually missed the cues for elaboration. The analysis also extracts strategies to hold turns to develop one’s talk. This research contributes to English teaching, particularly in speaking and interactional skills, and its findings can be applied to the practice of question-answer sequences in English language instruction.
