Description

Wenceslau de Moraes (1854-1928), a Portuguese, lived for sixteen years and died in Tokushima. His O “Bon-odori„ em Tokushima well depicts Tokushima and its common people 100 years ago through his loving eyes. It is most miraculous that Tokushima, a rural city and not a large city like Kobe or Osaka, was introduced to Portugal and even to Europe 100 years ago by one Portuguese. How he saw Tokushima and its people, living as a plain people not as a high rank Portugal Naval officer and afterwards a diplomat and consul in Kobe, is quite helpful to us living in this complicated modern ‘globalized’ world.
