Globally, few countries require public health nurses to acquire national qualification. In Japan,the public health nurse must be nationally qualified and has a crucial role in maintaining health of the people. Lately, public health nurses are required to be highly competent as the health demands of the people change and diversify, as does the workplace environment of these nurses.Therefore, developing their competence is extremely important. This review is mainly focused on methods by which public health nurses acquire competence in Japan.
