Description

This paper focuses on the AV director Tadashi Yoyogi. Previous research has positively discussed his works as expressing a unique worldview. However, the intentions of the director have not been considered. This paper analyzes his intentions considering changes in media and markets by referring to his works and promotions. In chapter 1, we examine the debate surrounding authenticity of sexual acts in porn studies and point out the orientation toward “Authentic Pleasure” in his works. In chapters 2-3, we argue that Yoyogi, who began his career in the pink film industry, became a representative AV director in the early 1980s. This was achieved through a quest for the authenticity of sexual acts, which he termed “Authentic Obscenity” that could not be depicted in pink films. In chapter 4, we show that Yoyogi introduced the New Age value of “self-liberation” in the late 1980s in response to the Inran (nymphomania) Boom caused by the booming sex industry, thereby transforming the significance of authenticity into an exposure of women's true nature while acclimating the image of the nymphomania. In chapter 5, we show that while Yoyogi talked about the crisis of masculinity in the 1990s, he also depicted the true nature of men's “True Orgasms”. From the above, it becomes clear that Yoyogi's worldview serves as a vehicle to present his authority by manipulating authenticity.
