After defeated in Sino-Japanese War, Qing Government started sending international students to Japan. After going aboard, many of them became energetic political reformers and devoted in publishing business, especially magazines. At the end of Qing dynasty, they published around 97 kinds of magazines, some of them even directly issued by revolutionists. Through international news, world history and essays, they tried to enlighten and change the outdated world recognition of Chinese people. Imperialism, described as the‘monster of the 20th century’, blamed for its expanding essence, only unity and progression of the country could help to face its challenge. They also claimed that joining this worldwide-scale compete is inevitable. Many famous magazines, such as “Zhejiangchao” (浙江潮) and “Hubeixueshengjie” (湖北學生界) shared this stance, and showed great affection for revolution of 1911. Due to the great contribution of the magazines published by Chinese international students, it is meaningful to take these magazines as research object. In this essay, we tried to focus on the world-view and relating discourses as seen in magazines. Through investigate the description of certain keywords, such as ‘world’ (世界), ‘imperialism’ (帝國主義) and ‘compete’ (競爭) ; we could discover that these magazines not only introduced new world recognition, but also propagated modern concepts to Chinese people. Here, the theory of evolution seems adopted deeply into their analysis of China-world relationship, which inflicted that only way out is to adapt to the harsh, competitive rule. However, here comes an indistinct contradiction: if we agree with the rightfulness of competition, how can we blame the western invaders who seem to be more‘suitable’for survival. Anyway, this theoretical dilemma seemed not to be the main concern at the time. In their discourse about ‘world’, Imperialism serves as the greedy enemy, and only enlightened, unified and patriotic people could survive.
