Notes

Reprint of the ed. first published in 1926

Ostensibly edited by Hadrian Dorrell from the papers of his friend Henry Willoughby; thought to be the work of Dorrell himself, though the name is probably fictitious. Has been ascribed to the Earl of Southampton, Matthew Roydon, and others. The present editor locates the poem at Cerne Abbas, and ascribes it to a friend of Raleigh

Contains an early allusion to Shakespeare, and is supposed to refer to him under the initials W. S
