<jats:p> The linear and nonlinear optical properties of 2-methoxy-5-nitrophenol (MNP) have been investigated. MNP crystals belong to the monoclinic system with space group P2<jats:sub>1</jats:sub>. The optical axis <jats:italic>Y</jats:italic> was identical to the crystal axis <jats:italic>b</jats:italic>, and the dipole axis was found to be nearly parallel to these. The cut-off wavelength was 522 nm. The second-order nonlinear optical coefficient <jats:italic>d</jats:italic> <jats:sub>22</jats:sub> at 1064 nm was 46±7 pm/V. </jats:p>
