<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Perennial woody plants of the temperate zone typically are challenged each winter by freezing temperatures. Their capacity to survive these winter temperatures is due in part to an evolved dormancy mechanism, often called rest. This mechanism exerts a commanding influence on growth and development. The physiology of rest has been studied extensively and much is known, but its more basic biochemical aspects are little understood. It is commonly assumed to be hormonally controlled. This review will summarize the physiological aspects of the rest mechanism and the evidence for hormonal involvement.</jats:p>
