Abstract

Abstract
Conversation Analysis has a major contribution to make to the analysis of pragmatics in aphasia. Building on previous work concerning repair in aphasic discourse (Milroy & Perkins, 1992), this chapter considers the negotiation in two particular features of repair organization in aphasic conversation involving (1) the preference for fast resolution of repair work and (2) the orientation to repair as socially sensitive. The analysis of dyadic aphasic conversation presented highlights the collaborative nature of conversation. Pragmatic difficulties can be viewed within a collaborative framework as residing in the interaction to be dealt with by the sequential, collaborative problem solving of both interlocutors.
