Description

Abstract
A method is proposed for evaluating the ΔH° value for the proton dissociation of an acid HB from the temperature dependence of the dissociation constant Ka: Instead of differentiating the pKa (= −log Ka) value of acid HB with respect to temperature, we select an appropriate acid HA as a reference and plot the quantity X = pKa(HB)−pKa(HA) as a function of reciprocal temperature. The plot was found to be linear with sufficient accuracy for most non-charged or negatively charged acids, for which pKa itself is a complex function of temperature. ΔH° values are thus readily evaluated by linear least-squares fitting. The theoretical background is discussed.
