Micromechanical properties of steel corrosion products in concrete studied by nano-indentation technique

Abstract Some mechanical property parameters of steel corrosion products require detailed examination in order to analyze cracking process of concrete with numerical models. Microstructural and micromechanical investigations on corrosion products were performed by combined analysis by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and nano-indentation techniques. The corrosion products were identified to be goethite, lepidocrocite, akaganeite, maghemite and magnetite. The local Young’s modulus values varied between 54 and 110 GPa, while the local nanohardness values varied between 1.9 and 8.3 GPa. Typical Young’s modulus and nanohardness of each phase have been determined.
