Description

Abstract
Diethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, β‐chlorodiethyl ether and diethyl thioether showed inhibiting and retarding effects on the polymerization of styrene catalyzed by boron trifluoride in benzene at 30°C.
Ethers exerted inhibiting and retarding effects only upon the initiation step. This conclusion was derived from the constancy of the degree of polymerization of the polymer produced in the absence or presence of ether.
Diethyl thioether affected not only the initiation, but also the other step.
