<jats:p>The momentum transfer cross section is expressed in terms of a matrix element of grad V, where V is the potential which need not be spherically symmetric. The result may be useful for estimating the momentum transfer cross section in circumstances where the usual expansion in partial waves is inconvenient or inapplicable as, e.g., when V is noncentral.</jats:p>
