Description

Abstract 1. 1. A female-specific serum protein (vitellogenin) was identified and purified from Japanese eel (Anguilla japonica) induced by injecting eel with an extract prepared from salmon pituitary. 2. 2. An egg yolk protein which had the same antigenecity with eel vitellogenin was also purified from egg yolk and characterized. 3. 3. The proteins were similar in many ways. Both proteins had a mol. wt of 350,000 and were composed of four identical subunits (mol. wt 85,000) and contained carbohydrates, lipids and phosphorus as glycolipophosphoprotein. Both proteins had the iron-binding properties. 4. 4. Amino acid compositions and NH2-terminal amino acid analyses of these two proteins also showed that they were very similar.
