Abstract Using the data of ionospheric disturbances correlated with a large sudden commencement and the geomagnetic fluctuation on August event, 1972 observed by oblique HF Doppler technique, the phase relationships between the frequency shifts and the geomagnetic variations on the basis of the theory as suggested by Jacobs and Watanabe are investigated. As the result, at the sudden commencement, the phase relation between the derivative of the geomagnetic horizontal component and the Doppler shift is in phase, and on the fluctuation, the phase relation is in opposite about the Doppler shift and geomagnetic variations. The calculated values of the Doppler shift almost coincides with our observational results.
