Duchenne muscular dystrophy or Meryon’s disease
Description
Abstract
This disease is eponymously associated with the name Duchenne because this French physician described the condition in detail in the 1860s (Duchenne 1861; 1868). His contributions were concerned with the clinical description of the condition and the muscle histology findings. However, several years previously an English physician, Edward Meryon, not only described the clinical features of the disease in some detail but also emphasized three very important points (Meryon 1851; 1852). Firstly, he emphasized that the disease affected males and was familial (none of Duchenne’s cases were familial).
