<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Anions derived from the title compounds are found to undergo smooth cyclization to give indoles and dihydroisoquinolines, respectively, on being heated in the presence of copper(I) iodide in hexamethylphosphoric triamide.</jats:p>
