Measurements of Gel Rigidity Using Surface Waves
Description
Surface waves are used to measure gel rigidity on gelatin and agarose gels. The method employs the detection of a laser light deflected by surface waves excited with a PZT bimorph. Propagation time vs propagation distance gives surface wave velocity which provides the rigidity. The sol-gel transition, ageing effect and frequency dependence of the surface wave velocity are observed for gelatin. Frequency and temperature dependences of the surface wave velocity are observed for agarose. These results show the usefulness of the present system as a rigidity measuring method of soft materials.
