<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>The photochromic and electrochromic responses of MoO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> thin films subjecting to UV irradiation were investigated in different environments. It was found that photochromic responses were different in different chemical environments. The presence of oxygen had a detrimental effect on the photochromic responses of the films. Additionally, the irradiated MoO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> films, after biased negatively in 0.1 M LiClO<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>/propylene carbonate solution, showed enhancement in electrochromism when compared to the non‐irradiated samples treated in a similar fashion. The MoO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> and WO<jats:sub>3</jats:sub> thin films showed significant differences in photochromic responses in HCOOH and C<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>H<jats:sub>5</jats:sub>OH vapors.</jats:p>
