Abstract The latitudinal dependence of regolith formation by thermal fatigue is studied for variable solar declination and surface thermal inertia. We find that regolith generation takes place in a surprisingly wide band around the equator and make predictions for the regolith distribution on the target asteroids of the upcoming Hayabusa2 and OSIRIS-REx missions.
