<jats:p>In past few years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones has been a hot topic encompassing technology, security issues, rules and regulations globally due to its remarkable advancements and uses in remote sensing and photogrammetry applications. This review paper highlights the evolution and development of UAV, classification and comparison of UAVs along with Hardware and software design challenges with diverse capabilities in civil and military applications. Further, safety and security issues with drones, existing regulations and guidelines to fly the drone, limitations and possible solutions have also been discussed.</jats:p>
