<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title><jats:p>Polythiophenylenes and polyoxythiophenylenes were prepared from aromatic dithiols and 1,4‐dichlorobenzene. The polymers were chlorinated, sulphochlorinated and nitrated. The chlorination was successful for polythiophenylenes and to a lesser extent for polyoxythiophenylenes. The nitration succeeded for polyoxythiophenylenes only and the sulphochlorination occurred only slightly for both polymers. The products were investigated by IR‐spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry and elemental analysis.</jats:p>
