Microsatellites in conservation genetics

説明

Abstract
In this chapter we will examine the role that microsatellite markers have played, and could potentially fulfil in the future, in the emerging field of conservation genetics. We first briefly discuss the applications, advantages, and disadvantages that microsatellite analysis brings to conservation genetics. We then highlight some current applications through the use of case study examples, ranging from the detection of inter-specific hybridization, through inferring population history, to distinguishing among demographic factors affecting present day allele frequencies, and include studies of inbreeding and reproductive success. In the final section we concentrate on the actual and potential additional information that microsatellites can give when compared with other quasi-neutral genetic markers, and explore the possible theoretical advantages and limitations that microsatellites have in conservation studies.
