<jats:p>We propose that polymeric organohalogenochromic dyes are one of the most promising and convenient functional materials for the colorimetric detection of volatile organohalogen compounds (VOHCs), including CH<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>Cl<jats:sub>2</jats:sub> and CHCl<jats:sub>3</jats:sub>.</jats:p>
