Description

Abstract
Reduction of octasilyltrimethylenecyclopentene (2) with lithium metal in tetrahydrofuran yields orange crystals of the tetraanion tetralithium (3) with 8 center/12 electron π-system. The molecular structure of 3 is unequivocally established by X-ray crystallography. The tetralithium 3 has a monomeric structure and forms contact ion pairs (CIP) in the crystals. The two lithium atoms (η5) are located above and below the center of the five-membered ring, whereas the other two lithium atoms (μ2) are bonded to the two exocyclic carbon atoms. The structural parameters of 3 are discussed in comparison to that of the neutral starting molecule of 2. The structure of 3 in solution has also been discussed on the basis of NMR spectroscopic data.
