<jats:p> Harmful algal blooms (HABs), caused by cyanobacteria like <jats:named-content content-type="genus-species">Microcystis aeruginosa</jats:named-content> , are a global threat to water quality and use across the planet. Researchers have agreed that nutrient loading is a major contributor to HAB persistence. </jats:p>
