<i>Arabidopsis</i> and <i>Nicotiana</i> Anthocyanin Production Activated by Maize Regulators <i>R</i> and <i>C1</i>

<jats:p> Anthocyanin pathway-specific transcriptional activators <jats:italic>R</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>C1</jats:italic> from the monocot maize were expressed in two dicots, <jats:italic>Arabidopsis thaliana</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Nicotiana tabacum</jats:italic> . Expression of <jats:italic>R</jats:italic> caused augmented anthocyanin pigmentation in both plant species and augmented trichome (hair) production in <jats:italic>Arabidopsis</jats:italic> . Alone, <jats:italic>C1</jats:italic> had no effect. Hybrid transgenic <jats:italic>Arabidopsis</jats:italic> expressing both <jats:italic>C1</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>R</jats:italic> produced anthocyanins in root, petal, and stamen tissues that normally never express anthocyanins. When <jats:italic>R</jats:italic> was expressed in the transparent testa glabrous (without anthocyanins and trichomes) mutant of <jats:italic>Arabidopsis</jats:italic> , the deficiency was complemented and both anthocyanins and trichomes were restored. </jats:p>
