<p>Mono-/tri-β-substituted metalloporphyrins have been synthesized and characterized. Dramatic reduction in the HOMO–LUMO gap with tunable electronic, spectral and electrochemical redox potentials were observed as the number of electron withdrawing groups increased.</p>
