Phylogeny of Firmicutes with special reference to Mycoplasma (Mollicutes) as inferred from phosphoglycerate kinase amino acid sequence data

<jats:p>The phylogenetic position of the <jats:italic>Mollicutes</jats:italic> has been re-examined by using phosphoglycerate kinase (Pgk) amino acid sequences. Hitherto unpublished sequences from <jats:italic>Mycoplasma mycoides</jats:italic> subsp. <jats:italic>mycoides</jats:italic>, <jats:italic>Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>Spiroplasma citri</jats:italic> were included in the analysis. Phylogenetic trees based on Pgk data indicated a monophyletic origin for the <jats:italic>Mollicutes</jats:italic> within the <jats:italic>Firmicutes</jats:italic>, whereas <jats:italic>Bacilli</jats:italic> (<jats:italic>Firmicutes</jats:italic>) and <jats:italic>Clostridia</jats:italic> (<jats:italic>Firmicutes</jats:italic>) appeared to be paraphyletic. With two exceptions, i.e. <jats:italic>Thermotoga</jats:italic> (<jats:italic>Thermotogae</jats:italic>) and <jats:italic>Fusobacterium</jats:italic> (<jats:italic>Fusobacteria</jats:italic>), which clustered within the <jats:italic>Firmicutes</jats:italic>, comparative analyses show that at a low taxonomic level, the resolved phylogenetic relationships that were inferred from both the Pgk protein and 16S rRNA gene sequence data are congruent.</jats:p>
