<jats:p>The double ionisation of CH<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>was measured to be 38.97+or-0.25 eV by means of energy loss spectroscopy of single-electron loss products of 3 keV collisions between CH<jats:sub>4</jats:sub><jats:sup>+</jats:sup>and H<jats:sub>2</jats:sub>, CH<jats:sub>4</jats:sub>, Kr and air. The lower limit for the lifetime of CH<jats:sub>4</jats:sub><jats:sup>2+</jats:sup>was determined to be 3.3+or-0.17 mu s.</jats:p>
