<jats:p> The chlamydospores of <jats:italic>Ustilago maydis</jats:italic> , <jats:italic>U. nuda</jats:italic> , and <jats:italic>Sphacelotheca reiliana</jats:italic> were analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry for their hydrocarbon contents. For the first time we observed that they contain paraffinic hydrocarbons; the average contents were 42, 58, and 146 parts per million, respectively. <jats:italic>n</jats:italic> -Alkanes having odd numbers of carbon atoms predominate, with carbon-chain lengths ranging from C <jats:sub>14</jats:sub> to C <jats:sub>37</jats:sub> . The major alkanes are <jats:italic>n</jats:italic> -C <jats:sub>27</jats:sub> in <jats:italic>U. maydis</jats:italic> , <jats:italic>n</jats:italic> -C <jats:sub>27</jats:sub> and <jats:italic>n</jats:italic> -C <jats:sub>35</jats:sub> in <jats:italic>U. nuda</jats:italic> , and <jats:italic>n</jats:italic> -C <jats:sub>29</jats:sub> in <jats:italic>S. reiliana</jats:italic> . Each type of spore carried a distinctly characteristic population of hydrocarbons. </jats:p>
