Quantum computers can perform many operations simultaneously, thereby speeding up the solution otherwise intractable problems. But many obstacles remain before a functioning quantum computer will be available. In his Perspective, Shields reviews recent advances toward exploiting the quantum properties of photons. The first applications are likely to be in quantum cryptography.
